Initial margin is generally the collateral required to open a futures position; maintenance margin is the minimum equity threshold that may trigger a margin call. Requirements vary by contract month, market conditions, clearing methodology and risk offsets, and clearing-firm policies may be higher than the exchange minimum.
Many venues use portfolio-based risk models (for example CME SPAN and Eurex Prisma) where there is no single universal per-contract margin; in those cases this directory will indicate “varies by portfolio — contact us” rather than show a misleading figure. For contract details, explore the Global Futures Markets directory.
