How We Execute Systematic Futures Portfolios

There’s a gap every systematic trader eventually runs into: the difference between how a strategy performs in a backtest and how it performs live. A surprising amount of that gap isn’t the model at all — it’s execution. Orders that go in late, fills that drift, rolls that get missed, allocations that aren’t clean. At Wisdom Trading, running systematic futures portfolios is the work we specialize in. Here’s how we actually do it.

From signal to fill

A live system produces signals on a schedule — some at the open, some on the close, some intraday. Our job is to make sure each signal becomes an order in the right market, at the right size, without delay or interpretation. For automated systems, that means reliable order generation and routing; for others, it means an experienced desk that places orders exactly as the rules dictate — not as someone’s discretion suggests.

Handling contract rolls

Futures expire, and a portfolio that trades dozens of markets is rolling contracts constantly. Missed or sloppy rolls are one of the most common ways live results quietly diverge from a backtest. We manage rollovers methodically, on the schedule your program expects, so the position you intend to hold is the position you actually hold.

Coordinating multi-market portfolios

Most systematic programs aren’t one market — they’re a diversified basket across equity indices, rates, currencies, energy, metals, and agriculturals, each with its own contract months, hours, and conventions. Keeping all of that coordinated — correct contracts, correct sizing, correct timing across sessions and time zones — is a large part of what reliable execution means in practice.

Allocation across client accounts

For CTAs and fund managers, there’s an added layer: trades placed for many clients at once have to be allocated fairly and consistently. We handle block-trade allocation across client accounts under compliant procedures, so every account is treated the way it should be and your records hold up to scrutiny.

Reconciliation and reporting

At the end of each day, positions, fills, and balances have to tie out. We reconcile daily and produce the statements and performance reporting that keep clients informed and your track record clean. For a manager, a clean, defensible track record isn’t a nicety — it’s the product.

The platforms and infrastructure behind it

We work with the tools serious systematic traders use — including Trading Blox and TradeStation — and clear through established futures commission merchants, so your program runs on institutional-grade infrastructure. Platform availability is subject to suitability and technical review.

The part you can’t automate

Even the most automated program has moments that need a human: a data feed hiccups, an exchange does something unexpected, a roll needs a judgment call within the rules. When that happens, you want to reach an experienced broker who already knows your account — not a ticket queue. That direct line is the quiet advantage of working with a boutique firm.

If you’re running a systematic futures program and want execution handled by people who understand the operational details, that’s exactly what we do.
