Managed Futures Trading Systems: Systematic Trading in Your Own Account

Managed futures trading systems for self-directed investors — trend, momentum, and mean reversion in your own account
Managed futures trading systems in your own account.

Most investors think systematic futures trading means one of two things: hand your money to a managed futures fund and pay 2% and 20% for the privilege, or try to build and code your own strategy from scratch. There is a third path that fits individual investors far better — trading proven systems in your own account, with smaller minimums, full control, and no management or incentive fees on your profits.

Here is how self-directed system trading works, the strategies you can access, and the systems we run for our clients.

The problem with the usual options

Managed futures programs run by Commodity Trading Advisors are excellent, but they come with trade-offs: high minimums, a fee structure that typically takes a management fee plus a share of your profits, and an account you don’t really control or see inside of in real time. At the other extreme, building your own systematic strategy means years of research, coding, and testing — and most traders never get there.

System trading through a broker sits in the middle, and for a lot of individual investors it is the sweet spot: you get access to researched, rules-based strategies, but you trade them in your own account, on your own terms.

A different model: your account, your control

With self-directed system trading, the strategy’s signals are applied to your separately held futures account. That changes everything about the experience:

Smaller minimums. Because you’re trading in your own account rather than meeting a CTA’s program minimum, you can start with far less capital and scale as you get comfortable.

No management or incentive fees on profits. You pay commissions to trade, as with any futures account — but you don’t hand over a management fee or a slice of your gains. The profits the system produces are yours.

Full transparency and control. The cash and positions sit in an account in your name. You see every trade in real time, you can add or withdraw capital, and you decide which systems to run and at what size. Nothing happens in a black box.

The strategies you can access

Systematic trading isn’t one thing — different approaches profit from different market behavior, and running more than one can smooth the ride:

Trend following captures sustained moves in either direction across commodities, currencies, rates, and indices. It accepts many small losses in exchange for the occasional large, durable trend — and tends to shine in the very environments that hurt stocks.

Momentum leans into markets that are already moving with strength, aiming to ride shorter, faster bursts of directional energy than a classic long-term trend program.

Mean reversion does the opposite: it looks for markets that have stretched too far, too fast, and positions for a snap back toward equilibrium. Because it profits in choppy, range-bound conditions, it can complement trend and momentum, which struggle there.

Systems we run for our clients

Wisdom Trading develops and trades a range of systems. Two we’re asked about often:

Aztec25 is a momentum trend-following system designed to engage with markets that are moving decisively, combining momentum entries with trend-following discipline to stay with a move while it has strength behind it.

Aberration is a legacy long-term trend-following system we have been trading since 1994 — one of the classics of the systematic era. We’ve kept the core trend-following logic that made it durable and updated it for today’s markets with enhanced risk management and improved entries and exits, so the strategy that worked for decades is sharper for the conditions traders face now.

These are two of several programs we make available. The right mix depends on your capital, your risk tolerance, and how hands-on you want to be — which is exactly the kind of thing worth talking through rather than guessing at.

You’re not doing it alone

Trading a system in your own account doesn’t mean going it alone. When you work with Wisdom Trading, you get a broker whose job is to oversee your account alongside you — an extra set of eyes with the same interest you have in seeing it perform. We’ll talk through which systems fit your objectives, review how the systems are behaving in current markets, flag what we’re seeing, and be a sounding board when you’re deciding whether to add a system, adjust size, or sit tight. It is the transparency and control of a self-directed account, with the guidance of people who have been trading these strategies for decades.
